If you've seen my recent post on Instagram about shooting bugs and flowers, you know that I've never really been into that much. But every once in a while . . . Thing is, I don't own a macro lens . . . What I do have is a . . . Well, I think I'll let you be surprised. Be assured that every one of these photos was shot with the same camera and lens.
When shooting these kinds of shots, I seldom look for the minute details and extraordinary sharpness so many lenses are capable of. While I do like lots of detail and sharpness, I'm after more of a feeling, more of a sense of the romantic (if a bug can be "romantic").
So enough teasing -- the lens is question is Nikon's 500mm f/5.6 PF telephoto.
Yeah, you read that right -- I'm doing macro work with a super telephoto. With a minimum focusing distance of 9.8 feet (that's really pretty close), it can get a pretty decent image out of a rather small bug or flower. Couple that with the Z7ii's 45 megapixels, and things can get very interesting. And I don't have to stick my face in some bug's business to get a decent portrait. Or scare it off as fast as I would with a regular macro lens.
Please give this a try. Every image was shot hand-held, on a Nikon Z7ii with a Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF lens, at f/5.6.
